Malaysians & their sorry censorships

I read today a rather interesting article about how “V for Vendetta” has GBLT themes (read Gay, Bisexual, Lesbian, Transgender). I bet the Malaysian censorship board was not able to psychoanalyse the blockbuster film enough. Maybe the movie wasn’t upfront about it.

Do Malaysians even psychoanalyse or study themes in-depth? We’re not talking about the surface themes but the ones that lie under the layers and subconsciously seep into our brains. I mean, in movies, the main themes and plot cannot exist on their own. They need others to support their rationale and narrative.

That is the problem. Our censorship board banned Brokeback Mountain but allowed V for Vendetta. Go figure.

Wait. Oh, I get it… I know why… V for Vendetta bashes the culture. It doesn’t condone it. Hollywood blockbusters. Bah.

Man, if Spartacus were to be shown in Malaysia cinemas again, they’d probably let it through without knowing…

Seriously now, our Malaysian censorship board needs to be more fair in their manner of censorship. They want Malaysians to be progressive yet they hide us from such real issues and make it taboo. It’s good to be sheltered but some times, I think we are too protected for our own good that it works against us and the worst sex crimes surface. Don’t you think?

Sure, we can look at it from a religious point of view. Let us not allow our minds to be engrossed in such unpure thoughts but if you don’t educate them on why it is so unpure, then it’s not going to help is it? I believe in Malaysia, we pretend it doesn’t exist. It’d be like the religious leaders in the bible who made up so many laws on top of God’s original laws to “protect” the people and the outcome? People who believe that they have to work for their salvation, which is so wrong. But then again, the religions that do exist in Malaysia believe that we must work for our ticket to heaven too. Such wayward thinking. They need to know the truth.

Anyway, a couple of weeks ago, I believe I spotted the Malaysian Censorship Board advertising their vacancies. Unfortunately, I already snagged a new job. If not, I would have full on applied. However, I probably would not have been chosen because of my religious orientation and maybe my open-mindedness. (It’s funny how I say I am open-minded…moi?)

The article that talks about GBLT themes in V for Vendetta is here. Maybe only people who watch out for the themes or who are accustomed to it, spot it.

I am still not keen to watch V for Vendetta. It still doesn’t appeal to me. I suggest you go watch it and tell me what you think. I do wish Malaysia would have shown Brokeback Mountain. For balance sakes. Off to the pirates we go!

Actually I don’t really care about Brokeback Mountain…I’m waiting for the L…I’m dying here just waiting…sigh.
