Mariah Carey’s Concert in HK CANCELLED!

YEAH! WOOHOO! I actually clapped my hands in glee when I read that. YEAH!

How can I be so heartless? I’m not attending the concert… that’s why!

Plus, I knew concert sales weren’t doing too well. No. 1 - the tickets were WAY too expensive. No. 2 - they were packaging the tickets with CDs so that’s not a good sign. No. 3 - the promoters may not have been experienced enough to handle such a large scale promotion and artiste. I am sure Mariah’s asking price is not a small sum. The Adventures of Mimi concert was meant to be a US tour only. The promoters probably could not cover the costs of her fee so they had to cancel. No harm done. Although, it is a bit late considering the concert is tomorrow.

I was upset two weeks ago when someone questioned why I wasn’t going if I was such a big fan. It really cost too much to go and I thought, I could skip it. Now, I don’t even have to feel regret or guilt anymore. *pumps fist in air* YEAH!

Apparently, Mariah Carey had ’specific last minute demands’. Don’t blame the artiste. If a concert promoter cannot fulfill their part of the agreement, they should just accept it.

I bet Mariah Carey’s management wanted upfront payment. Or most cost involved in terms of stage set-up, etc. I don’t blame her. It’s easy for an artiste to put on a show and then have the promoters run out on her later.

The success of the Emancipation of Mimi was meant to be focused in America. A lot of promotion was done in America. This was meant to be her “comeback” album for America. Therefore, her record company neglected a lot of the other continents but I don’t blame them. They needed to concentrate their efforts and resources.

The response in HK was low. Only 4,000 tickets sold. Maybe the promoters anticipated too much. Besides the artiste, costs are a major player too. The ticket prices for her concert in Malaysia were reasonable. So were the ones for Singapore. The HK ticket prices were way above my budget and if I were to fly to HK to watch her, I want the best seats and not the lousiest. Therefore, cost is a major factor. For anybody.

So boo to the concert promoters. If it was 4,000 tickets, then maybe they should have booked a smaller venue and then it would have made sense for us to pay more to watch Mariah Carey.

This reminds me of the Force of Nature concert that was held for the tsunami victims in 2005. They charged exorbitant amounts of money for the worst seats in the house and expected people to pay so much in the name of charity. Nobody could afford it and in the end, nearing to the concert date, they kept slashing prices, slash, slash, slash… till they had to give it away for free. In the end, the tickets were only a fifth of the original price but by then, people weren’t interested even though the line-up was superb… black eyed peas, backstreet boys, appearances by clay aiken, wyclef jean, fugees, etc etc… a 7 hour concert for a lot cheaper than what they had aimed for.

Anyway, thanks Mariah Carey for not performing in HK… :)

Allow me to add that Mariah Carey managed to pull only 10 venues as sold out venues. I dont think the promoter could not per se afford to meet her unrealistic demands. I think Mariah Carey needs to analyse her niche and loyal fans. Her past music ventures failed to attract huge demographic followers (only kids and teenagers). Therefore she has failed to built a strong fan base for adults to recongnize her as a superb singer and performer.
Unlike Madonna or Celine, Mariah doesnt have stage presence and charisma. Her success in America cant guarantee a full stadium capacity because chart success is not everything. However, reality bites that even 7 -octave singer cant guarantee sold out shows!

I cant wait for Mariah Carey to stop making music. She is so painful to watch and listen as everything sounds the same!

You are right DidieTomYum but Mariah ranked in the top10 for concerts of the summer 2006. Plus most of her concerts were 90% sold.

You are also right that she may not be as graceful onstage. I would rather she be a singer than a stage performer… people forget stage performers but singers with classic radio-friendly hits, last forever.

Mariah knows who her fans are and she’s been able to appeal to the masses and be relevant even though people consider her to have past the top40 stage of her life. Her major comeback in 2005 proved that she’s still got it and unlike Madonna and Celine who have had to branch out to their niche markets and please them, Mariah can still hold her ground with the young and old alike. We Belong Together is a prime example of that having crossed both the mainstream and adult contemporary markets with ease.

Mariah, I feel, does not require Vegas shows to keep her afloat and in the business. She doesn’t need to thrill her audiences with crucifixions or shock factors or even wear anything provocative (although she wants to) to draw an audience….

:) As for you Minie Me, doesn’t everything on the top40 sound alike these days? Telling me that songs by Timberlake or even Fergie with their nonsensical beats and rhythms is music? It’s noise in my opinion. It distracts you and disguises their voice to make the songs listenable… a true singer and songwriter writes music that can carry on through the decades such as Mariah’s songs that if you were to listen to them 5 years down the line, they’d still be good to the ears.
